Ghana MP Advocates for Establishment of Dedicated Health and Safety Authority

In an address to the Parliament House of Ghana on June 13, MP (member of parliament) Frank Annoh-Dompreh advocated for the establishment of a dedicated government health and safety authority. Health and safety legislation in Ghana is currently the responsibility of the Ghana Standards Authority, which focuses its supervision efforts on end-product delivery.

WHO to Start Prequalifying Biosimilars for Cancer Treatment

4 May 2017 - The World Health Organization (WHO) announced its plan to pilot a new project to prequalify biosimilars for cancer treatment. The decision was announced at a 2-day conference in Geneva about how to increase access to biotherapeutic medicines. The move is expected to bring down the prices of the most expensive cancer treatments available, making them more accessible to low- and middle-income countries.

Independent Audit of Qatar World Cup Construction Contractors Reveals Continued Worker Abuse

Findings from an independent audit conducted by Impactt Ltd., published in April 2017, revealed continued abuse of migrant workers by contractors hired to help build Qatar’s 2022 World Cup stadiums and facilities. This audit of 10 randomly selected contractors indicated some improvement in working conditions since Amnesty International’s own study last year, which also revealed poor and dangerous conditions at World Cup construction sites and workers’ living quarters.

St. Lucia Launches New Occupational Safety and Health Policy

28 April – St. Lucia’s Labor Department launched the country’s first official Occupational Safety and Health Policy as part of the new Labor Act in response to goal 8 of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which seeks to “transform the world through the promotion of inclusive and sustainable economic growth, employment, and decent work for all.”

IAEA Releases Improved Self-Assessment Tool for Nuclear and Radiation Safety Infrastructure

On May 4, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) launched a new version of the Self-Assessment of Regulatory Infrastructure for Safety (SARIS) tool, designed to help countries determine whether their nuclear and radiation safety infrastructure meets IAEA safety standards. These standards comprise over 100 documents which outline the basics of how to establish, maintain and continuously improve nuclear and radiation safety regulatory frameworks.
